Early Life

Angelina Jolie Voight was born in Los Angeles, California. Her father Jon Voight was an established Hollywood actor, who had earned worldwide fame for his performances in 'Midnight Cowboy', 'Deliverance' and 'Coming Home' - the latter winning him an Oscar. Angelina's mother was the part-Iroquois, part-French actress and model Marcheline Bertrand, who, incidentally, worked as Angelina's manager. Angelina's parents split up before she was two-years-old, and her mother moved back to the East Coast with Angelina and her brother James, where they lived in the Palisades, in the state of New York.

When Angelina was just fourteen, she dreamt of becoming a funeral director and even moved out of her home and had a live-in relation. During this time, she worked as a fashion model and even appeared in a number of music videos. She returned to her theatre studies after two years and graduated from high school. Her career, as a professional actor, began only in 1993, when she played her first leading role in the low budget film, Cyborg 2. However, her first major film was Hackers, where she met her first husband Jonny Lee Miller.

Career

When she was seven years old, Jolie had a small part in Lookin' to Get Out in 1982, a movie co-written by and starring her father, Jon Voight. She committed to acting at the age of 16, but initially found it difficult to pass auditions, often being told that she was too dark. Jolie began her professional film career in 1993, when she played her first leading role in the low-budget, straight-to-video science-fiction sequel Cyborg 2, as Casella "Cash" Reese, a near-human robot, designed to seduce her way into a rival manufacturer's headquarters and then self-detonate. Jolie was so disappointed with the film that she did not audition again for a year.

Jolie's career prospects began to improve after she won a Golden Globe Award for her performance in TNT's George Wallace in 1997. She portrayed Cornelia Wallace, the second wife of Alabama Governor George Wallace, played by Gary Sinise. The film was very well received by critics and won, among other awards, the Golden Globe Award for Best Miniseries or Television Film. Jolie also received an Emmy Award nomination for her performance.

Later Career

Angelina Jolie married British actor Jonny Lee Miller in 1996 and the same year, she appeared in a number of movies, including 'Love Is All There Is', ‘Mojave Moon’ and 'Foxfire'. She separated from Johnny the following year, finally divorcing him in 1999. In 1997, she starred in the thriller 'Playing God', the TV movie 'True Women' and a Rolling Stones music video. The same year, she won a Golden Globe Award and was nominated for an Emmy, for her performance in 'George Wallace'.

n 2006, she acted in ‘The Good Shepherd’ and also gave birth to her daughter, Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, in Swakopmund, Namibia. Jolie made her directorial debut with the documentary 'A Place in Time', in 2007. Her performance in 'A Mighty Heart', released in 2007, won her a fourth Golden Globe and her third Screen Actors Guild Award nomination. She adopted a three-year-old boy Pax Thien, from Vietnam, the same year. She last appeared in 'Beowulf' and has completed shooting the action film 'Wanted' & the DreamWorks movie 'Kung Fu Panda'.
